On-chain data shows that trading volume in the crypto sector has dropped to its lowest level in two years, suggesting that investors are losing interest in the market.
Crypto Trading Volume Sees a Major Drop
In a recent post on X, on-chain analytics firm Santiment discussed the latest trend in crypto trading volume. “Trading volume” here refers to the total amount of a specific token being traded on centralized exchanges.

When trading volume rises, it means exchanges are seeing more activity around that asset, indicating growing interest from traders. On the other hand, a drop in volume suggests investors may be losing interest, as they’re making fewer trades on exchanges.
Santiment shared a chart showing how trading volume for major cryptocurrencies has changed over the past few years:
As the chart shows, trading volume for the entire crypto sector peaked in mid-2025. Since then, it has been declining for most coins. After the latest drop, crypto trading volume has fallen to its lowest point since mid-2024.
“Traders seem hesitant to buy or sell aggressively, as macro uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and recent liquidations keep them on the sidelines,” the analytics firm noted.
While this trend might look bearish at first, past patterns suggest otherwise. “Historically, some of cryptoโs strongest recoveries have come after periods when interest, volume, and participation were at their lowest,” Santiment explained.
It remains to be seen how the sector will develop in the near future.

Although crypto trading volume has dropped, adoption hasn’t slowed down. In another X post, Santiment highlighted that the Total Amount of Holdersโan indicator tracking the number of non-empty addresses on a networkโhas been rising for major assets in recent years.
The chart shows that Ethereum has seen the strongest adoption, with 195 million holders. “While social media focuses on $ETHโs underperformance, user adoption has been moving in the opposite direction,” Santiment said.
