XRP needs to break past $1.51 before a real breakout can happen, according to market commentator Matt Hughes. One analyst thinks that moment could come this week โ but only after the market shakes out the weakest holders first.
A Pattern Years In The Making
MichaelXBT, a well-known crypto analyst, says XRP has been forming a falling wedge on its weekly chart for months. This pattern usually signals an upward move once the price breaks above the upper line.

XRP has been stuck in this pattern since July 2025, when it hit a high of $3.66. Since then, it has dropped about 60%, landing near $1.37 during a broader market selloff that started in October of that year. The upper boundary of the wedge has stopped XRP several times. Attempts near $3 in late 2025 failed, and a push in January 2026 stalled at $2.41. Now, with the price moving into the narrowest part of the pattern, MichaelXBT believes the next move โ the “shakeout” โ is close.
“XRP will shake you out this week. Then the breakout will begin. This is by design. They want the masses out.” โ Crypto Michael (@MichaelXBT) May 20, 2026
What A Falling Wedge Means
A falling wedge happens when the price moves between two downward-sloping lines that get closer together. Selling pressure usually weakens as the pattern develops. When the price finally breaks above the upper line, it often leads to a sharp upward move. That upper line is currently around $1.50 to $1.51 for XRP โ a level Hughes says the asset must clear before a breakout can be confirmed. XRP hasn’t managed a clean close above that area yet.
The pattern alone doesn’t guarantee a rally. But analysts who follow this setup say that when the price reaches the tip of the wedge, it usually forces a decision in one direction or the other.
The Shakeout Before The Move
MichaelXBT’s warning isn’t really about the breakout itself โ it’s about what happens just before it. He says the market will likely push XRP lower first, flushing out holders who aren’t committed. In his view, that move is intentional โ designed to clear out retail investors before the main move begins.
Other analysts raised a similar concern in March, arguing that the next big price move could break the resolve of most ordinary XRP buyers.

Whether that shakeout happens this week as predicted is anyone’s guess. For now, XRP is at a crossroads, pressed against a pattern that has been building for nearly a year.
