Three people stole nearly $1 million in Bitcoin from a couple in their home, threatening them with a knife. According to French news outlet TF1 Info, early Monday morning a man and woman in their late fifties in Le Chesnay, France, were held captive by three individuals pretending to be police officers.
The woman opened the door after they identified themselves as police, but was then pushed inside along with her husband. Both were forced onto their sofa, where the husband was tied up. One of the assailants pulled out a knife and threatened to harm the woman unless her husband transferred roughly €900,000 worth of Bitcoin.
After the transfer was completed around 9 a.m., the robbers fled in a white van. The woman, who sustained minor injuries, then freed her husband and called neighbors for help.
No arrests have been made so far. The Versailles prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into kidnapping, armed robbery by an organized gang, and criminal conspiracy. The case is being handled by the Brigade de répression du banditisme (BRB).
This incident is part of a growing trend of real-world Bitcoin robberies. On March 4, trader “Mr Silly” lost around $24 million through a combination of address poisoning and an offline robbery. On November 24, 2025, an armed robber posing as a delivery worker tied up a San Francisco homeowner and stole $11 million in cryptocurrency.
TF1 reports that kidnappings for cryptocurrency have increased in France since early 2025. In January last year, Ledger co-founder David Balland was abducted and later rescued by police.
